Retirement of US District Judge Charles R. Wolle

Thursday, December 2, 2021

It is with mixed emotions that the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa announces the retirement of United States District Judge Charles R. Wolle. While we are delighted to celebrate his career, we will miss our colleague dearly.

Judge Wolle has served the State of Iowa and the United States as a judge since 1981. He began his judicial career as an Iowa state district judge and Iowa Supreme Court justice. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserve. He received a lifetime appointment to the federal bench from President Ronald Reagan.

Judge Wolle is brilliant, kind, even tempered and compassionate. We will always remember him as a "work horse" on the court. His court reporter reminds us of the criminal hearings that he would hold during breaks in a civil trial. He tried many complex patent and intellectual property cases and was truly an expert at it. He did not shy from safely trying cases during the pandemic.

On behalf of the entire court for the Southern District of Iowa, we honor and thank our wonderful colleague for his lifetime of service to others.
