How will I know when my CLE’s are due?

The Clerk’s Office will send out notices in October. Reports are due by March 1st of each year. (If you are newly admitted, your report will be due two years from your admission year.)

 

Where do I go to file my CLE’s?

Go to  www.iasd.uscourts.gov. Click on Attorneys/Continuing Legal Education/CLE Filing Instructions.  Please print off filing instructions.

 

What if I don’t have Adobe?

Print off the CLE Report Form. Fill it out, scan it and save as a pdf.

 

What if I don’t file my CLE’s?

You will be suspended from practice by the Chief Judge if you have not complied with the CLE requirement.

 

Can I pay by check?

The CLE report will need to be filed electronically in pdf format through Case Management/Electronic Court Filing. Payment methods are: debit, credit, or ACH withdrawal.

 

Will I need a login and password for Case Management/Electronic Court Filing?

Yes. To obtain a password and login go to www.iasd.uscourts.gov. Click on Attorneys/Continuing Legal Education/CM/ECF Attorney Registration Form. Fax the completed form to 515-284-6418. A login and password will be emailed to you. Each attorney will need a  password and login issued by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. You will not be able to file using your bankruptcy, PACER, or another court’s login and password.

 

What if I forget my password and login?

Call the Clerk’s Office at 515-284-6270 to obtain your password and login.

 

Who is exempt from CLE?

  1. Attorneys employed full time by Iowa Legal Aid or
  2. Attorneys that have accepted a pro bono or non-litigation case from the U.S.D.C. Southern District of Iowa within the last 2 years.
 

What are the Southern/Northern District of Iowa’s CLE requirements?

Attorneys are required to attend at least 6 hours of approved CLE courses in a 2 year period.

 

Is there a list of approved CLE courses?

Yes. The list is updated each January and is posted on our website at www.iasd.uscourts.gov. Click on Attorneys/Continuing Legal Education/Approved CLE for Federal Practice.

 

How do I know if my 6 hours of legal education in the federal practice area within the last two years will qualify?

We are currently in the process of reviewing our accreditation process. This page will be updated when the review process is completed, and a new Coordinator has been appointed.

Can I receive an extension?

No. The Southern/Northern Districts do not offer extensions.

 

How can I change my status to inactive, retired, etc.?

You may call the Clerk’s Office at 515-284-6270 to change your status.

 

Can I carry over excess credit hours?

Yes. A maximum of 3 credit hours may be carried over. You will be responsible for keeping track of your carry over hours from year to year.

 

Can I review or print my report once it has been filed?

The case is sealed. Before logging off, print the notice of electronic filing and keep for your records.

 

If I have been inactive and wish to become active in the Southern/Northern Districts, what should I do?

File an updated CLE report on line with a $50.00 fee. Forms can be found at www.iasd.uscourts.gov. Click on Attorneys/ Continuing Legal Education.

 

How do I update my name, firm name, address or email information with the Court?

Submit your changes to the Clerk of Court, PO Box 9344,Des Moines, IA 50306.

●    If you are an attorney in an active case with a name, firm name, address or email change:
Electronically file a “notice of change of address” promptly in every active case in which the attorney has appeared.  The Clerk’s Office will update all pertinent information in the ECF system.  Attorneys do have the capability to update their address, telephone number, fax number and email address in the CM/ECF system at “Utilities”, “Maintain Your Address”, “Maintain Your E-Mail” or “Maintain Login/Password”.  If the attorney is linked to a firm name, they will not be able to change their firm name, as it is hard coded in the CM/ECF system.  The Clerk’s Office must be notified in writing of the change in firm name.

●    If you are an attorney that does not have any active cases:
Any update must be sent in letter form to the Clerk’s Office.  The Clerk’s Office will update all pertinent information in the CM/ECF system.  Attorneys do have the capability to update their address, telephone number, fax nubmer and email address in the CM/ECF system at “Utilities”, “Maintain Your Address”, “Maintain Your E-Mail” or “Maintain Login/Password”.  If the attorney is linked to a firm name, they will not be able to change their firm name as it is hard coded in the CM/ECF system.

PLEASE NOTE: If the entire law firm name, address or email address has changed, a “notice of change of address” must be promptly filed in every ACTIVE case in which any attorney from the firm has appeared.  If there are no active cases,  a letter must be sent to the Clerk of Court indicating either the new firm name, address or email address.  The Clerk’s Office will update all attorneys linked to this firm with the pertinent information in the CM/ECF system.  If law firm names are linked to an attorney, the attorney will not be capable to change the firm name in “Utilities” as it is hard coded in the CM/ECF system.  The Clerk’s Office must be notified in writing of the change in firm name.
